Occupational therapists are skilled at taking a holistic approach when working with individuals. They focus on their physical, cognitive, emotional, and psychological performance as well as their social support.
Interventions may include:
– Home safety evaluations, home modifications and fall risk assessments
– Training on the use of assistive equipment and adaptive strategies to assist with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as dressing, bathing, basic meal preparation, and medication management
– Recommendation and fitting of durable medical equipment (DME)
– Educating patients and caregivers on fall prevention, home exercise programs, proper transfer techniques, pain management, energy conservation, and work simplification
– Engaging patients in leisure activities and integrating them back into their communities
– Provide referrals to community programs to increase social participation and engagement with leisure activities
